When is the best time to buy flights for the May Day weekend?
There are several ways to find cheap flights for the long May weekend. It is worth starting your search well in advance to snap up the best bargains, but if you fancy a bit of spontaneity this May, last-minute offers should satisfy you too.
Here are a few tips on how best to find cheap flights for the May Day weekend:
- Start looking for tickets at least six months in advance if you want to find a good deal, or take advantage of last-minute offers.
- When searching for flights, compare prices across different comparison sites, e.g. Google Flights, Kiwi, eSky or Skyscanner.
- Browse offers in your browser’s Incognito mode if you can.
- If time is not your top priority, look for flights with connections – but be warned that these are the situations in which luggage most often gets lost at the airport.
- Be flexible about your dates – shifting a few days earlier or later can make a very big difference, especially to the price of flights and the cost of accommodation.
- Look for flights to your destination first, and only then for accommodation.
Bear in mind that the May Day weekend is an extremely busy time for tourism, so it is worth planning ahead or taking advantage of last-minute offers.
Be prepared, though, for the fact that you will certainly not be alone at your holiday destination – quite the opposite: there will be plenty of people around all the tourist attractions who, just like you, decided to go away for the May Day weekend.

Flying for the May Day weekend — things to remember
If you are only just starting to look for flights for the May Day weekend, bear in mind that prices change rapidly because these dates are so popular. If you spot a bargain, do not put off buying your tickets.
Cheap airline tickets may cover only the cost of the flight itself, without checked luggage and with just one piece of hand luggage, which will not comfortably hold all your things.
Remember that choosing your seat on the plane usually costs extra, and if you skip it, the system will assign you a seat at random, with no guarantee that you will end up next to your travelling companion.
It is very important to check in online, otherwise you will pay a great deal of money for it at the airport.
At the airport, keep an eye on your luggage and never leave it unattended, as this may prompt the security services to intervene and leave the owner of the abandoned luggage facing extra costs.
Also watch out for potential thieves who keep an eye on suitcase owners. If you are travelling with expensive photography or computer equipment, put a GPS tracker in your suitcase so you can follow your luggage’s location, even while waiting to collect it.
Remember that suitcases most often go missing during transfers to another flight. If there is a GPS tracker in your luggage, it will make the whole process of tracing a missing suitcase much easier for airport staff. Do not forget to tell them about it if such a situation arises. It is also a good idea to attach a mini tracker to your keys, so you are not frantically searching for them at your accommodation on the day you fly home.
