How Does the e-TOLL System Work and How Do You Add a Vehicle?

2 July 2023

Updated: March 2026

e-TOLL is Poland’s electronic toll collection system for travelling on toll roads. It applies primarily to heavy vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes and to buses, regardless of their gross vehicle weight (GVW). To use e-TOLL, you need to register for an Online Customer Account (IKK), add a vehicle and assign a device to it that transmits geolocation data.

Since 1 July 2023, tolls for light vehicles have been abolished on the motorway sections managed by GDDKiA (Poland’s national roads authority): A2 Konin–Stryków and A4 Wrocław–Sośnica. However, this doesn’t apply to heavy vehicles or to combinations with a trailer if their combined GVW exceeds 3.5 tonnes

What is e-TOLL?

e-TOLL is the state-run electronic road toll collection system. It covers around 5,870 km of the toll road network, and a map of the sections covered is published on the system’s official website. Since 1 February 2026, an expanded toll road network and updated electronic toll rates have been in force.

How does e-TOLL work?

e-TOLL works on the basis of the vehicle’s geolocation data. The system receives route information from a mobile app or from an on-board unit. On this basis it calculates the toll for travelling on roads covered by the system. For the user, this means that once you’ve registered correctly and assigned a device, the toll is charged automatically with no need to interact with the system at all.

Who has to use e-TOLL?

e-TOLL is mandatory primarily for heavy vehicles. This means motor vehicles and vehicle combinations with a gross vehicle weight of over 3.5 tonnes, as well as buses. It’s also important for drivers of cars towing a trailer. If the combined GVW of the combination exceeds 3.5 tonnes, the journey may be subject to a toll.

Adding a vehicle to e-TOLL – how to do it

You add a vehicle to e-TOLL in your Online Customer Account (IKK). The official process is simple:

  1. Log in to your IKK,
  2. go to the Vehicles tab,
  3. click Create vehicle,
  4. select a billing account,
  5. enter the country of registration and the registration number,
  6. fill in the vehicle details and confirm the GVW.

If the system doesn’t retrieve the data automatically from CEPiK (Poland’s central vehicle register), you’ll need to enter it manually and attach a scan of the registration certificate as a PDF. This is an important detail, because without correct vehicle details your registration won’t be complete and e-TOLL won’t work.

How to assign a device to a vehicle in e-TOLL

Once you’ve added a vehicle, you need to assign a location device to it. In your IKK, go to the Devices tab, select the billing account and the vehicle, then click Assign device. Once the pairing is successful, the system shows the status “Linked”.

How to register for e-TOLL

Registering for e-TOLL starts with setting up an Online Customer Account (IKK). For a private individual, the official process looks like this: log in, choose the type of entity, set up a billing account, create a vehicle and link a location device to the vehicle. The system lets you log in via, among others, Login.gov.pl, the mObywatel app, an e-ID card or online banking.

What payment methods does e-TOLL offer?

Once registered, you can settle your tolls in one of two ways: via a prepaid account or via an account with deferred payment. The official e-TOLL website lists both options as the basic methods of settling tolls.

What do e-TOLL rates depend on?

The e-TOLL rate depends on the road class, the GVW of the vehicle or vehicle combination, and the exhaust emission class. The system’s website also provides a vehicle classifier and the current rates in force since 1 February 2026 for class A, S, GP and G roads.

What to watch out for with e-TOLL

The most common mistake is misclassifying the vehicle or a combination with a trailer. If the combined GVW exceeds 3.5 tonnes, the vehicle may become subject to the electronic toll, even if it’s essentially a passenger car. The second frequent problem is a device that hasn’t been assigned correctly, or incomplete vehicle details at registration.

The simplest way to use e-TOLL

If you’re looking for a suitable device that supports the e-TOLL system, choose the notiOne GPS PLUS tracker, a convenient alternative to the complicated e-TOLL app.

You don’t need to keep the app running constantly or in the background while you drive. All you need is an active e-TOLL account and a notiOne tracker. Quick and convenient! You’ll find more information on how the e-TOLL system works with the notiOne GPS PLUS device in this article on our blog.
